Historical Significance

  • Foundation: Sadiya was established around 1248 AD by King Ratnadhwajpal of the Sutiya dynasty, serving as their third capital until 1524 AD.
  • Name Origin: The name “Sadiya” is derived from “So-Diya,” meaning “Corpse Burial,” linked to a burial site of a king’s son in the area.
  • Cultural Heritage: The town is noted for its archaeological significance, with remains of structures from the Chutia era still visible.

The primary occupation in Sadiya is agriculture, with local markets facilitating trade among various indigenous tribes such as the Mishimi and Khamti. They exchange goods like rubber and ivory for textiles and metal products.

Tourism

Sadiya attracts visitors due to its natural beauty and historical sites:

  • Tameshwari Temple: It is also known as Kesaikhaiti. A significant Shakti temple accessible via ferry from Dhola Ghat. The remains of an ancient temple, built by the Chutiyas in the 15th century, can be found here. The original Assamese term is Kesaikhaiti (where “kesa” means raw and “khaiti” means eat), referring to a semi-pre-Hindu goddess, a variant of Goddess Kali, who accepts offerings of raw meat, which explains the name (meaning one who eats raw).
  • Natural Attractions: The scenic landscapes along the Brahmaputra River offer opportunities for boating and exploring local flora and fauna. Dhola Sadiya or Dr. Bupen Hazarika bridge is the second longest bridge in India.
  • Roing: Another beautiful destination is Roing, located about 45 km from Sadiya, which can be included in your Sadiya trip.
